Living in Cologne

The CGA Office offers assistance to obtain a room at a student residence. Those are available through the Cologne Students' Association. The rent for a room is typically around €200-300/month, and these are available to all members of the Students' Association (Kölner Studentenwerk). Private accommodation can be found online. Costs vary depending on the type of accommodation.

Tuition Fees and Semester Contributions

For PhD students of the University of Cologne there are no tuition fees. An obligatory semester contribution of currently approx. €260 gives students the right to use public transport throughout North-Rhine Westphalia. It also covers the cost of insurance against accidents on the campus, use of the university sports facilities, and social insurance contributions for the University of Cologne. Students have to be registered in order to be eligible for the Ph.D. exam.
